New York man sentenced in gun case

STEUBENVILLE – Davon Jones, 33, of Medford, N.Y., was placed on one year of probation on Wednesday by Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge David Henderson after Jones pleaded guilty to an amended charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Jones initially was charged with having a weapon as a convicted felon. Jones was arrested by City Police on Oct. 16 after a loaded handgun was found under a seat in a car in which he was a passenger.

The charge was amended Wednesday during a hearing before Henderson.

Jones faces up to 18 months in prison if he violates probation.

Boil order called for water customers

FOLLANSBEE – A 24-hour boil order remains in effect for Follansbee’s downtown water customers following a line break on Rose Street behind the American Legion Post Wednesday morning.

The order, which doesn’t affect customers at Parkview or Highland Hills, is in effect until further notice.

Among affected customers were Follansbee Middle School and Jefferson Primary School, which dismissed students three and a half hours early.

City Manager John DeStefano said the break was caused by the freezing and thawing that often affects older lines at this time of the year and was repaired by noon.
